It’s been nearly 19 years since I read a local newspaper article about 2 women – neighbors of mine, really – who had joined together the year before to establish a foundation to help end AIDS.  I was immediately drawn to the story about their concern for the future faced by their children in a world impacted by AIDS and their ingenuity in creating a symbolic bracelet to raise funds and awareness.

In those days, AIDS was life threatening, and in fact, complications from AIDS had ended my brother’s life several years earlier.  I had been searching since his death for a way to honor him by committing at least part of my life to the AIDS cause.  I decided to inquire about Until There’s A Cure Foundation.  My ‘career’ with the Foundation began with a phone call I placed to inquire about volunteering.

Friends, associates and acquaintances ask why I am still involved with the Foundation and why I commit so much of my energy and time to the cause.  The simple answer is that AIDS is not over, and HIV is still being transmitted – in the U.S. and around the world.  Although the Foundation would love to see that a cure has been found — and to be able to close our doors — that goal has not been reached.

Medical research has made great progress in the treatment of AIDS and, recently, in testing the prophylactic use of medications to prevent HIV infection following exposure.  Many vaccine development research projects are underway.  However, expectation is that vaccines which will truly end the pandemic are still years away.  So, while we have hope, until that day, critically important work in education and prevention must go on.

Every day at Until There’s A Cure we encounter comments such as:

“I thought AIDS was over.”

“Can’t you just take a pill and not be sick?”

“That’s not a problem in the U.S. any more, is it?”

“This doesn’t affect me.  I’m not at risk.  I’m not in that population!”

The short response to these comments is that AIDS is still a devastating disease affecting individuals, populations and economies in the U.S. and, to an even greater extent, in Africa and Asia.  In the U.S., the Centers for Disease Control estimates that 1 in 5 people who are infected with HIV, don’t know it.  And the virus is being transmitted at nearly the same rate as in past years, even here at home.

As to the comment about who is “at risk” — beyond those usually considered to be in danger — the reach of HIV infection was brought home to me recently when I heard the story of a graduate school student in a major West Coast university talk about having an intimate relationship with another professional on the East Coast for some time before she found out that he was HIV positive.  Without common sense prevention methods that had kept her from being infected with HIV, that might not have been the case.

At Until There’s A Cure Foundation, we continue to try to disseminate information as widely as possible so that people are aware that HIV and AIDS are still with us; that even with medication, AIDS is life-changing and a physically and financially burdensome illness; that understanding and appreciation for prevention methods are critical – until there’s a cure.

That’s why I’m still involved.  That’s why I serve as Board Chair of Until There’s A Cure Foundation.  That’s why I’m writing this blog.

I hope you will join me and the Foundation in the fight against AIDS.  To find out more, please view information on our web site at www.until.org, sign up for our email blasts, ‘like’ us on facebook, follow us on Twitter, and pass all of this along to your friends and associates.

And remember that perhaps the greatest risk of HIV is believing it’s not a problem anymore.

But for FBI agent Will Moreno (Laz Alonso, “Avatar”), things don’t add up with this suspicious dynasty. Convinced the troubled girl’s death was a homicide, he has a clever plan to get to the truth. Her name is Detective Joanna Locasto (Meagan Good, “Think Like a Man”). Twenty years ago she was Vivian’s best friend and practically grew up inside the Bowers’ home. And when she appears at Vivian’s funeral, the family re-embraces her and no one is the wiser. Joanna quickly begins to uncover dark secrets and clues about why Vivian’s life was very much in danger. At the same time, she rekindles an old romantic relationship and rediscovers the allure of the luxurious lifestyle she once knew. She’s about to see once again just how the other half lives… and dies.

Also starring are Victor Garber (“Alias”), Tate Donovan (“Damages”), Katherine LaNasa (“Alfie”) and Ella Rae Peck (“Gossip Girl”). “Deception” comes from executive producer/writer Liz Heldens (“Friday Night Lights”) and director Peter Horton (“Grey’s Anatomy,” “Dirty Sexy Money”). Solange Hosts Everyday People Brunch in Honor of World AIDS Day

Gerren Keith Gaynor Posted December 3, 2012

In honor of World AIDS Day and the release of her new EP, True, Solange Knowles joined Chef Roble and b condoms to host, “Everyday People,” a monthly brunch and party extravaganza in New York City.

The event was hosted at The DL rooftop on the lower east side with guests including celebrity eyewear designer Stevie Boi, blogger and Internet personality Kid Fury, BMW drag racer Domonic Anderson, fashion designer Richie Rich, “Single Ladies,” actress Cassie Freeman, and tastemakers in fashion, media, and music. Solange, who attended the event with her boyfriend and music video producer Alan Ferguson, danced to the tunes of DJ Moma, alongside the 300 plus invite-only crowd.

But the focus was on advocating safe sex and HIV/AIDS prevention, highlighted by new and sexy condom line, b condoms, founded by two young African-American entrepreneurs, Jason Panda and Elkhair Balla. “The event brought everyone together for World AIDS Day and highlighted the importance of getting tested,” Panda said. Boxes of b condom’s standard and platinum lines were made available to partygoers. Stevie Boi, known for designing trendy eyewear worn by Lady Gaga, Nicki Minaj, and Miguel tells VIBE that he is working on a special edition eyewear line, which will include a b condom built into the lens (similar to the style popularized by Lisa “Left Eye” of TLC), as a commemoration for the fight against AIDS.

Shevon Stoddart is a 2x Olympian that didn’t advance for the 2012 Olympics in London.  Shevon finds herself in London for the Olympics on a new “track” in performing her song “Go” and “Hot Girl” tonight after the closing of the Olympics.  Athletes have so many talents a very few get to express them especially in front of their peers.

She will start preparing for Worlds next year but will enjoy getting to express another side of herself in front of an audience.

If you not in London have a listen: Go Mix

Shevon is not your typical rising Pop sensation, but then again, she’s not your typical anything.  Possessing beauty, confidence, poise and a melodically sophisticated yet accessible sound, few debut artists will make an impression quite like the Jamaican-birthed and New York-raised singer, who also happens to be an Olympic track star.

Since she was a kid, singing has been one of her two passions.  At age 7, her mom enrolled her into voice lessons and from there the stars began to align themselves for her future success.  Much like the childhood of another famous R&B/Pop singer, Shevon’s mother was a hairstylist in a popular salon, which provided the perfect backdrop for the young crooner to showcase her lyrical and dance skills in front of waiting patrons.  She quickly garnered a buzz around town and eventually found her way onto a bona fide stage where she performed at numerous talent shows, often taking top honors, which led to her being tapped to sing at events, including weddings.

After spending years mastering her artistic craft, the ambitious singer turned her attention to her other love- athletics, specifically track and field.  However, she still continued to write and record music throughout her training, never losing focus or her desire to create.  Upon graduating from the University of South Carolina on a full scholarship, Shevon became a professional athlete and made her first Jamaican Olympic team in 2004 and her second in 2008.  Ranked 1 of the top 10 400-meter hurdlers, Shevon definitely believes in pushing boundaries, even though she doesn’t set them.  “I figured now was the time to combine both dreams after college and now I’m focused on acquiring a Grammy and an Olympic medal, simultaneously.  I’m not afraid to do what no one else has done.  I believe anything is possible.”

Shevon incorporates that same fearlessness into everything she does, including the type of music she creates.  With her primary musical influences being Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey and Toni Braxton, it is evident that her new sound is rooted from an old soul.  “Growing up, I would practice and study those 3 artists non-stop until I started to emulate them,” recalls Shevon.  “However, as I grew as an artist, I knew I had to develop my own sound and style to set me apart from everyone else.”  And she has certainly achieved her goal.

The first single from her yet-untitled debut album, “Hot Girl,” finds the sexy singer strutting with bravado between Pop and Reggaeton melodies, which deliver the perfect mix to keep the bouncy track dance floor-friendly.  The contagious “go-girl” anthem packs plenty of sonic heat and was crafted to keep a crowd moving.  “I want ‘Hot Girl’ to teach young girls and women to embrace the beauty and strength that lies within them.  Being hot isn’t just about your body, it’s about respecting yourself.”  “Around You,” a breezy, mid-tempo banger reveals Shevon’s sassy brilliance at applying a range of styles while retaining her identity.  “I like to write songs that make people smile and inspire them, while maintaining a fun and upbeat sound.”

“I’m excited to welcome my fans from far and near to join us to raise awareness and funds for the charities my family and I cherish so deeply,” Sparks said. “Beyond the events, I know people will enjoy all that New Bern has to offer.”

The romantic drama is directed by Academy Award-nominated writer/director Scott Hicks — “Shine,” “No Reservations.”

In the story, U.S. Marine Sgt. Logan Thibault (Efron) returns from his third tour of duty in Iraq, with the one thing he credits with keeping him alive — a photograph he found of a woman he doesn’t even know. Learning her name is Beth (Schilling) and where she lives, he shows up at her door, and ends up taking a job at her family-run local kennel. Despite her initial mistrust and the complications in her life, a romance develops between them, giving Logan hope that Beth could be much more than his good luck charm.

Rounding out the cast are Jay R. Ferguson — TV’s “Mad Men;” Riley Thomas Stewart — “The Beaver;” and Adam Lefevre — “The Bounty Hunter.”

Anthony Cherry, The Artist

“I created a vision, set a goal, and followed my intuition. I… let God and fate work!”

Q: For our readers who may not be familiar with your career could you please tell us a little about yourself, how you got your start in hair, and how long you’ve been in the business?

A: I am from St. Louis MO (The Show Me state.) and I live by that motto. I came to Los Angeles in 2002 and I have shown Hollywood that I too have a star on Hollywood Blvd that awaits me! LOL!

I am a Hairstylist in the entertainment business and I’ve been doing hair since I was a child. I was raised in the salon. My granny was the first person in the city of St. Louis to ever do extentions and I guess it fell on me inately! I’ve been a professional since 1992 working all over the United States and abroad. I also have worked with just about everyone in Hollywood – both men and women. If you go to my website at www.ACHERRY-ONTOP.com you can learn more about me, or google me!

I got my start in the biz by working on Snoop and Akon’s music video “I Wanna Love You”. I then went on to work with Nick Cannon on “Wild N’ Out”, then with Missy Elliot and the rest is history! I’ve done tons of music videos and endless editorials.

…I’ve worked with the best and now it’s about me shining my star within me!

Q: Many barbers and stylists dream of one day having a career and a client list such as yours; how did you turn your dream into a reality?

A: I turned my dreams into a reality on March 3, 2002 when I drove across country form STL to LAX after watching Oprah. She had a show (The Best is Yet to Come) about people who had been on their jobs for years, but there was more they wanted. And how they followed their hearts. So I created a vision, set a goal, and followed my intuition. I came to Hollywood and let God and fate work!

Q: What was your biggest hurdle/obstacle in doing so?

A: My biggest hurdle and obstacle in accomplishing my dreams were getting in, and fitting in tight niche circles in Hollywood. And then getting my work seen and noticed by the right people, as well as taking constructive criticismfrom established Hollywood Hair Stylists on my so St. Louis image and persona! I was rough around the edges and needed to learn proper manners to be embraced by Hollywood! Urrrr! Looking back, I’m so thankful. And I’m a new person. I’ve been cultivated!

Q: Do you have a signature style that you are most known/sought out for?

A: My signature style, that I’m sought after by all ethnicities would be my weaves, cuts and styling of glamour and edgy polished hair. …”If I weave it, you will never believe it.” And if I sew it, you will never know it. And fasho I can grow it!

Q: With such a varied portfolio of clients from Lala Vasquez-Anthony, to Lady Gaga, Dirty Money, and even Prince is there anyone you haven’t had a chance to work with yet that you would love to work with? If so, why?

A: I’d like to get a chance to work with Jennifer Lopez because I love catering to glam pusses, and sex sirens! She would most def enjoy my sexy hair! Also, I’d like to get a hold of Oprah, just to show her I can feather and have her hair bouncing and behaving just as well if not better! And I’d like to get a hold of Brittany Spears, to show her how a weave or clip-ins should be blended!

Q: Which do you enjoy more? Styling in a salon, being on a video or movie set, styling for photo shoots, or getting stars ready for the red carpet, and why?

A: I choose to be on location. I love to be able to go from one extreme to another. From whipping models up for “Rip the Runway”, to back on a plane to prep Ciara for a Red Carpet event, to styling Keisha Knight Pulliam for an interview with “E” News, to getting a cast ready for a movie!

I love the freedom that freelance gives me. Being in a salon, to me is stifling at this point of my career. I’ve had my own two salons in Saint Louis “Bumpn Heads” and “Celebrity Profiles” at age 22 and I grew up in one…I’m cool! LOL!

Q: What is the most rewarding part of your career?

A: The most rewarding part of my career is looking back and seeing where hair has taken me, and the effect I’ve had on peoples lives and the heads I’ve touched. To build esteem in a lady and to bring out that sexy in someone makes me feel like I’m living for a purpose!

Tips, Tricks, & Trends

“A hot client that can rock your work will sell itself!”

Q: Could you tell us a little about “Weave Wisdom”?

A: “Weave Wisdom” is a 3 part (video) series Hair Tutorial about how to do a weave, best methods to accomplishing ultimate flatness and the proper way to install a weave. It was produced by the staff of “BOSSIP” for “Madame Noire”. You can log onto www.MADAMENOIRE.com to see the 3 minute, 3 part series!

Q: As a professional hairstylist, what are five of your most coveted products (must haves!) and why?

A: As a professional, the five most coveted products I live by are: Real Silk Hair Care Systems, My Extentions from http://www.JUJUHAIR.com, Sabastian Hair Spray, my Spray Shine, and Real Silk Flat Iron! Revolutionary!

Foam Mouses, and Dudley’s Hair Care Treatments are my must haves!

Q: If a woman is bored with her hair, what’s your advice for a quick and easy style switch to get her out of that rut?

A: If a woman is bored with her hair I suggest as a quick fix: to color it or weave it to a desired style!

Q: With Winter just around the corner, do you have any hair tips for our readers?

A: With Winter right around the corner, my hair tip to readers is to have straight and natural hair. Curls are cool, but straight hair is chic, polished, and frizz free!

Q: NEWBIE TIP: If you could share one tip with an aspiring celebrity barber or hair stylist what would it be?

A: My tip to a newbie barber or hairstylist is to be a sponge in your environment. Look, learn, and listen. Find a person who’s work reflects what you aspire to be and study it! Please become diverse in styling short, long, edgy, glam. And diverse in clients – all ages, all ethnicities!

Q: CLIENT TIP: What makes for a great client? Is there something that you wish your clients would or would not do before or during their session with you?

A: What makes a great client for me is not coming to me with wet hair. Come dry and ready to go. And know what you want or let me do my thing! LOL!

Q: MARKETING TIP: At this stage in your career do you still rely on marketing and promotion of your skills, or is it more word of mouth these days? If you do still market/promote yourself what has proven to be the most effective?

A: At this point in my career it has been word of mouth for me – how I’ve gotten to where I am. Now that I’m here is when I must market myself via internet – being viral is key to success. Also, a hot client that can rock your work will sell itself…your work will speak for itself!

What’s Next?

“If I weave it, you will never believe it. And if I sew it, you will never know it…”

Q: Any new or exciting projects you’re workin’ on these days?

A: I’m so excited about the “Weave Wisdom” Tutorials I jut completed, as well as being a panelist for Sophisticate Black Hair’s “Ask a Stylist” on their website.

Also, I’m gearing up to shoot and direct my first feature film called “TRI” where I am an actor in it. I’m hoping for the best and ready for the rest!

December 1st: World AIDS Day Increase awareness, compassion, understanding and responsibility …

Until There’s A Cure http://www.until.org World AIDS Day is celebrated on December 1 each year around the world. It has become one of the most recognized international health days and a key opportunity to raise awareness, honor those who have passed on, help increase consciousness, compassion, understanding, and responsibility as we continue to fight HIV/AIDS. World AIDS Day provides an opportunity for all of us – individuals, communities and political leaders – to take action and ensure that human rights are protected and global targets for HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment and care are met. As you know when a disaster happens, everybody wants to help, but too often after six months, six years, we are on to a new story. We are hoping that this will not happen to our cause. I am here to ask for help. Nearly thirty years into the epidemic, there is still no simple solution to breaking the cycle of HIV. Worldwide, HIV remains a human tragedy — infecting more than 2.7 million each year. In the United States, more than 56,000 Americans are infected every year. That is one person every 9 ½ minutes. The epidemic has claimed the lives of nearly 600,000 Americans and affects many more. Currently, there are more than a million Americans living with HIV. Almost half of all Americans know someone living with HIV. We need to mobilize the country to support fighting HIV! Why take a stand against HIV/AIDS now? Because this year’s college graduates have never known a world without AIDS – let’s work to make sure that their children never have to know a world with it. Because, for nearly 30 years, AIDS has been a matter of life and death in the United States and around the world; enough is enough. Our dream is that no one else will become infected with HIV. For those who are HIV positive, we are dedicated, on their behalf, to educating all people about the virus and the overwhelming need for love and compassion in fighting this pandemic. Please help us continue our fight by making a donation today http://www.until.org With respect and gratitude Nora Hanna Executive Director 560 Mountain Home Road | Redwood City, CA 94062 US
